The Mighty Diamonds are a reggae vocal group from the Trenchtown area of Kingston, Jamaica, who enjoyed their greatest success in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The core of this group was formed by Donald ‘Tabby’ Shaw (born 1947-2022), Fitzroy ‘Bunny’ Simpson (born 1949-2022), Lloyd ‘Judge’ Ferguson (born 1949) and lead singer Fitzroy ‘Bunny’ Davis (1947–1999).

The group was formed by Tommy McCook (born Tommy Patrick McCook) on May 28th 1979 at his home studio in Trench Town, Kingston. He recruited his friend Bennie Moore who had just finished recording a demo album with Charlie Mingus’ band (Mingus had also recorded an album called “The Mighty Diamonds”). After hearing this demo, Bob Andy convinced McCook to form an all-star lineup featuring himself as lead singer; Inner Circle members Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare; Freddie McGregor aka King Jammy; Prince Fatmata’s cousin U-Roy; Mikey Chung aka Big Youth (who was then known under his real name Michael Quazi); Ronnie Burke aka Squeeze Walton(who later went on to become one of dancehall’s most successful producers), Pat Kelly aka Tony Rebel etc…

The band had many hits over the years including “Right Time” which reached number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1978. Their second single release was called “Don’t Stop Me Now”, which was also successful on that chart reaching number five there!

The Mighty Diamonds’ debut album, “Hip Hop” was released in 1989. It was an instant success, selling over 300 000 copies worldwide by 1990 and spawning hits such as “Riddim Boy” which went on to be sampled by artists such as Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur and Public Enemy among others.
In 1976 the Mighty Diamonds joined forces with Bunny Lee and recorded “Right Time” at Lee’s Aggrovators studio.

Bunny Lee was a Jamaican record producer who owned the famous Black Ark studio (which later became Buffalo). He was responsible for recording many of Jamaica’s greatest artists during the 1970s, including Bob Marley & The Wailers, Toots & The Maytals, Desmond Dekker & The Aces and Gregory Isaacs.
